Pempek Kapal Selam ( Indonesian Submarine ) is one of the name of pempek palembang, it is considered very famous and very delicious pempek among others.
This submarine is very easy to be found in any street is palembang and beyond, usually they start to sell this since around 3 pm until mostly 11 pm, many tourists ( local or foreign) enjoy this situation. Even though some shop sell this submarine since in the morning, many palembang people also like to consume pempek for their breakfast but most of them like to eat this phenomenal pempek in the evening or at night,most of the used this as a sidedish.
This submarine is actually not so difficult to be made after you have tried once.Below I would like to guide the best way how to make it
Ingredients / Direction of How to Make Pempek Kapal Selam
Gentle boiled 3 eggs.These eggs only for Pempek KAPAL SELAM ( Submarine ) other kind of Pempek Palembang such as skin pempek,pempek lenjer,dos,etc does not require this gentle boiled egg. For other kind of pempek, egg will be used only for making dough / cake mixture.
½ kg Sago Powder1 ounce of wheat powder ( see the comparison between the sago and wheat ). The prominent material is sago while wheat is only to make the dough become not too hard.
- ½ kg Fish Meat, find Spanish Mackerel Fish or GABUS ( Fresh water fish ) this two of fishes are very common used by. If you can not find these two fishes use any kind of fish, select the ones that have white meat and easy to take out its bone and skin due to we will use its meat only, the fish should not have so many bones.

- Combine above ingredients and pour with fresh water, until you make such cake until it become good mixture and soft. It is look like cake mixture for cake recipes.
- Peel all the eggs. Wrap each egg by this dough. All of the dough has an egg in side, we named this is submarine.
- Preheat of a boiling pan set the heat in 100 Degree C.
- Then boiled the dough, pour slowly all the submarine into the heat pan until cooked, until they are floated. For the first time the submarine is poured to the hot water, they will shin in the bottom of the pan, and slowly they will come up floating on the top of the water, it is the indication that they have cooked.
- Filter the submarine, set aside and allow the submarine to cool for some hours.
Fry the submarine until the color become golden brown but not dark brown. Allow to cool for some minutes, due to this can serve hot or cool.
- ½ kg Palm Brown Sugar
- 2 tablespoon Artificial Vinegar
- ½ ounce of Garlic ( for this pempek kapal selam recipes Peel the garlic)
- 1 tablespoon of Dry Shrimp
- 1 litter of fresh water
- ¾ ounce of Bird’s eye Chili, stalk removed
- ½ ounce of tamarind ( seeded )
- ½ tablespoon of Sea Salt
Direction of making vinegar
- Blend all above ingredient with some water
- Filter it
- Cook until boiled
These below ingredient of Pempek Kapal Selam will be combined after PEMPEK is ready to serve.
- ½ Cucumber ( thinly sliced )
- 1 tablespoon of dry shrimp powder
- ¼ tablespoon Black Pepper Powder
How to serve Pempek Kapal Selam
- Cut / slice the submarine into 4 parts Pour the vinegar into the plate and place the submarine Pour with Cucumber and Shrimp Powder Seasoning with black pepper.
